THE HILL FAMILY OF SHAKESPEARE By Janaloo Hill
Bronc Busting and Ballet, Horse Racing and History, Cow Punching and Modeling, plus a determined woman’s desperate battle to save her land from a government agency.
All these contrasting things have played a part in the lives of the Hill family of southwestern New Mexico.
Frank and Rita Hill purchased the ghost town of Shakespeare in 1935. Since then Frank and Rita and later their daughter Janaloo and her husband, Manny Hough, have struggled to preserve this historic site. In spite of droughts, near range wars, hard times and even a disastrous fire, this unusual family is still at work. Read about their struggles and triumphs.
With chapters like “Cause Texas Got Too Tame,” “Homesteading Days,” “ A Lot of Horses and Some Horse Races,” “A Horseback Trip To California,” and “The Great Highway Battle,” this book covers a hundred years in the lives of Frank and Rita Hill and their daughter Janaloo. Its 328 pages have something for those who are interested in Shakespeare Ghost Town, for those who are interested in southwestern history and early ranching days, for those who love horses, as well as for those who enjoy reading about unusual people.
This book is being published by Shakespeare Ghost Town Inc., and all profits will go toward the repair and reconstruction of this historic site.
Price, $11. Mail orders please add $3 for postage and handling.
